FAQ

imagesAt Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry, we want our patients in Brookline and Pembroke, MA to be well-educated about any procedures they’re considering. The Pinhole Surgical Technique offers many benefits and is affordable for patients with any budget. Below we’ve collected just a few of the most commonly asked questions.

What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is an alternative surgical procedure to gum grafts that is less invasive, requires no stitches and has a quick healing time. The surgery itself requires poking a hole above or below the receded area of the gumline. Dr. Spitz will gently tug on the malleable gum and adjust it to cover the roots of your teeth once more, leaving the appealing dental crown showing. After the gum has been placed, tiny collagen strips are packed down between the teeth to ensure that the gum is secure. Patients have noticed that the only sign of surgery, the pinhole itself, disappears after one day of healing.

What sets it apart?

While the Pinhole Surgical Technique has quite a few differences from the traditional gum graft procedure, the most significant is aesthetic. Gum grafts require that a sample of tissue from the roof of the patient’s mouth be removed. This could cause some minor discomfort for the patient as it requires stitches to close up the area where the tissue was removed. Then the extracted tissue is applied underneath the gums of the receded area, but still covering the teeth to the appropriate length. The original gums are then sewn over the new tissue and left to heal until the tissues converge.

What sets the Pinhole Surgical Technique apart is that this procedure does not require stitches! A gum graft, on the other hand, requires that stitches are used where the tissue is removed and where it’s reapplied. Because the pinhole itself can be healed by the next day after surgery, our patients can enjoy their new smile almost instantly.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of the Pinhole Surgical Technique are physical and emotional. Not only is there no scarring or stitches to worry about, patients can enjoy their new smiles as soon as one or two days after surgery. With a traditional gum graft, patients are left to endure a lengthy healing process.

What if I have dental anxiety?

At Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry we believe it’s vital that patients to receive regular dental care. However, we understand that for those with a fear of the dentist, that doesn’t come easily. Dr. Spitz and the Smileboston team offer many sedation options to keep you relaxed and calm throughout your treatment.

Am I a good candidate?

The best candidates for the Pinhole Surgical Technique are those who are in dire need of it. Many patients whose gums have receded to dangerous lengths are highly recommended for the pinhole surgery or traditional gum graft, depending on their preference. The gums must also be in generally good health, despite the recession. If your gums look discolored or have been afflicted with a form of periodontal disease, be sure to let Dr. Spitz know at the first consultation. He may recommend other procedures be done first before the Pinhole Surgical Technique.

How much does the procedure cost?

Each gum rejuvenation treatment is as unique. Depending on your condition and how much of the receded gum needs to be adjusted, the final cost of the procedure will vary. At Smileboston Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry we strive to provide our patients with the best dental treatment available. Because we know that financial management is an important part of your overall health, after your initial consultation you will receive a diagnosis, a recommended treatment plan and a written cost estimate for your personalized treatment options.
